Resident & family reviews
3.8 · 20 reviewsThis was the third time I had to go to rehab after a hospital stay, and this was by far the best of the 3. I actually had to stay for 6 months due to having to have 2 antibiotics twice a day by IV. For the most part, the food was excellent, by far better than other places. The only complaint I could make was that it was understaffed, especially at night, so getting help sometimes took too long. The nurses, aides, PT and OT were all so friendly and helpful.
I don't reside here but I do transportation for people who do and it's a very good place for the elderly.
Workers do not attend patients all the time. Most workers are overwhelmed with patients.

I am currently in rehabilitation at DeMay. I fell and broke my ankle and required surgery. I was transferred to DeMay after a week in hospital. So far my experience has been not very good. I am a cognitively intact, independent individual who just needs help with managing the non weight bearing status for the next several weeks. I need preparation to return home not long term care. That is how I am being treated like a long term care patient. I am always addressed as sweetie or honey and they automatically assume I can't do certain things myself. I was talked down to by one of their nurse managers called Janet. No one talks to you like you are a normal, intelligent human being. I am not being treated like someone who is in rehab preparing to return to the community. I get treated like a long term care patient who going to live out the remainder of their life in that facility. It has a very institutional feel to it. Everyone is just another patient, another task that needs to be completed and checked off your list. I have been a nurse for nearly 13 years and I know how long term care and rehabilitation go. I know the difference of the needs of a rehab patient opposed to a long term care patient. At DeMay everyone is the same. You are not a functioning person, you're just a thing in a room. I would not recommend this place for rehabilitation. Update: I ended up being at DeMay for two months following my ankle fracture. There were many obstacles while receiving treatment here. I will say that PT and OT are excellent. They really did help me regain physical strength and help me regain some level of independence. Most of the staff are excellent people who care about their patients and what they do. They have some top notch nurses and CNAs. They also have some staff that should consider finding a new line of work. They are extremely short staffed particularly on evening shift. Rochester Regional really needs to pay attention to this. It is not safe for facility to be run with so few staff. It causes stress amongst the staff and negatively impacts patient care. Organisations like this need to look at how they treat their employees and pay them appropriately for what they do. High rates of staff burnout and staff turnover only decrease the quality of care the patients receive. I unfortunately developed a pulmonary embolism in early April. It was not handled well by the evening nursing staff. The evening RN supervisor never even came to assess me. I was handed Ibuprofen and anxiety medication and left alone in pain. I called the night nurse and she got the night RN supervisor who did come to see me but was still very nonchalant about my situation. I realise I did not have a classic presentation of a PE but when a patient who has a high pain tolerance and is lying there crying and has been short of breath for the entire week you shouldn't tell the patient "I don't think it's cardiac" and "I think it is muscular" I can understand that there is no way to know exactly what is going on with a person. That is why you send them to the ED. Telling a patient "You can go to the hospital if you want to" is not how you handle the situation. In these cases you don't let the patient direct you. I am a nurse and I also know my body very well a lot of people don't have the knowledge about their own bodies and will trust the judgement of nurses because they feel that the nurse is more knowledgeable than they are. I could have potentially died if I didn't tell them I needed to go to the hospital. A lot of patients won't insist on seeking emergency treatment because nobody really wants to go to the hospital and be saddled with a huge hospital bill. As a nurse I cannot diagnose a patient that is why they need to be seen by those that can and have diagnostic equipment at their disposal. No nurse is perfect, we all make mistakes but unfortunately in our line of work mistakes can be deadly. My advice is listen and have empathy for your patients, err on the side of caution and send a patient to the ED if you're unsure.
Very clean well maintained place.
I think the leader of De may should spend time at each unit to see what the nurses go through each day for little pay
Have been here for 5 weeks..genuine caring courteous staff...however short staffed and wait long periods at times when calling for help..personnel is very attentive to needs when available..Will respond more when I'm released..
My mother has lived at Demay Living Center for several years on the Wolf Unit. Every time we visit her room is immaculate and she is well dressed. Someone always takes the time to do her hair and she looks lovely! The staff are very patient with her. During the COVID pandemic, they took immediate control when there was a COVID case and did a great job of keeping it from spreading. During this time of the COVID pandemic the staff assured us she was safe and still receiving the good care she has always received, especially the recreation therapist, Jamie, has been FANTASTIC! She has arranged visits through the glass door with us and mom and helps to translate what she and we are saying during the visit. No one really wants their loved one to be living in a nursing home but if there are no other options, DeMay Living Center is one of the best in my and my family's opinion.
